Description

The planetary nebula Abell 8 was discovered by George Abell in the constellation Auriga in 1955. It is also known as PN G167.0-00.9 and PK 167-00.1. It is an object rarely photographed, perhaps due to its small size (1' arc), low brightness (mag 17.6) and uniform appearance, with a circular shape, an HII peripheral ring and an OIII interior with few relevant details. It is surrounded by bright clouds in HII, which are not emitted by the nebula itself, although they are ionized by its strong UV radiation. In different images, including mine, a small blue central star appears, but it is not clear that it is the residual star of the nebula, which is a very faint doublé visual. Northwest of Abell 8 (top and right of my image), at a distance of 3.5 arcmin, is the open star cluster Bica 6, which contains about 100 stars. Abell 8 belongs to this star cluster  (reference).
